Στην πραγματικότητα τα Α-1 και Α-19 βυθίστηκαν στα Μέγαρα τον Απρίλιο του 1941. Οι λεπτομέρειες της εγκατάλειψης τoυ Α-1 είναι διαθέσιμες στην εξαιρετική μελέτη Investigation of a Sunken World War Two vessel in Western Crete την οποία μπορείτε να διαβάσετε στο διαδύκτιο. Η μελέτη αφορά την ταυτοποίηση ενός αποβατικού τύπου Mk1 που εντοπίστηκε στη Φαλάσαρνα της Κρήτης αλλά παρέχει χρήσιμες πληροφορίες και για τη δράση των υπολοίπων αποβατικών της κλάσης στην Ελλάδα. Το Α-1 όπως θα δούμε παρακάτω ανελκύστηκε από τους Γερμανούς και επισκευάστηκε.

Σχετικά με το Α-19 και χωρίς να έχω ιδιαίτερες γνώσεις της ναυτικής ορολογίας δεν είμαι τόσο σίγουρος ότι βυθίστηκε.
Στην πολύ ωραία έρευνα που αναφέρεις παραπάνω, για το Α Lighter στην Κρήτη, ο συγγραφέας αναφέρει

A19 was disabled when ropes became entangled around a propeller putting the port engine out of action. All moveable equipment was taken off and the craft scuttled near Megara (ADM199/806; Heckstall-Smith & Ballie-Groham 1961 p. 132)

Με βάση το παραπάνω μπορώ να υποθέσω ότι το Α19 βυθίστηκε εάν κάτι τέτοιο υποδηλώνει ο όρος scuttled.

Ακόμα όμως και αν είναι έτσι έρχεται ο David Thomas στο βιβλίο του (Crete 1941, The Battle at Sea) να αναφέρει, ανάμεσα σε άλλα σχετικά για τα A lighters.

Two of these valiant small craft arrived off Megara at 1700 on the 23rd. they were the A1 commanded by sub-lieutenant D.Peters RNVR, and the A19 commanded by Mr Cooper, Skipper RNR. Both were attacked by dive bombers and A1’s FIAT machinegun was blasted from its mounting by a near miss. Altogether some thirty bombs were aimed at Peters’s craft (ie A1) before she found refuge under a cliff face. A 19 was also near missed by eight bombs all of which exploded close astern.

The A1 tucked away near the cliffs, was signaled out for special Stuka attention in the evening. She was repeatedly struck by bombs and settled in two fathoms of water where she remained at rest until blown up by a naval demolition party.

Serious trouble came when A19 in Megara [commanded by Skipper Cooper RNR] loaded with 800 men fouled one of her propellers and was reduced to walking pace on one engine. Sometime later – at about 0200- this lone engine broke down beyond repair. The troops were rescued but the A-19 became a complete loss.

At about 0230 Hutton [ Lieutenant-Commander, appointed temporary beach master at Megara) collected his beach parties, and boarded the Coventry. In his subsequent Report he wrote:

“ Immediately I arrived on board and I asked the captain to detail a destroyer to sink A 19. The signal was apparently misunderstood, and, I regret to say that she was not sunk. It is to be hoped, however that the enemy dive bombers will carry this out before they discover she has been abandoned… it is a cause of great regret to me that some 300 men and the Army embarkation staff were left ashore.

Αυτό που καταλαβαίνω λοιπόν από τα παραπάνω είναι ότι και το Α 19 το αφήσανε στη μοίρα του.
