Ripping out colonies
In areas that are popular with divers, the natural
mortality rate of gorgonians is increased
three-fold by damages and uprooting that
occur there. Significant amounts of death
are caused by divers ripping out gorgonians
and other large anthozoans through bad diving
practices and by damage inflicted through
the anchoring of boats in areas where these
colonies are present. Some protected areas
in the Mediterranean, such as Medas Islands
in Spain or Port Cros in France have suffered
damage caused by excessive diving and anchoring
in vulnerable zones.
