Merouville - “Grouperville” To the south-east of the Lavezzi Islands lies what has to be the most well known dive site in Corsica: Merouville. Here, a large rock formation rises to around 17 metres from a sandy seabed at about 30 metres. At up to a whopping 1.2 metres in length, the few dozen groupers that congregate in the area are definitely the main attraction. These majestic giants have become so used to divers that they will come right up to you and even let you stroke them. Günther Hayer was one of the first to dive this site and has known some individual fish for more than 20 years! Groupers are some of the biggest predatory fish in the Mediterranean and they almost always remain at the same location, living among caves, crevices and overhangs. Lurking in these hiding places, they keep a vigilant lookout for passing prey, which mainly comprises squid, crustaceans and smaller fish. They might look a bit ungainly, but these giants can pounce with surprising speed. When doing so, their mouths open so quickly that the hapless victim is sucked in. The brown grouper (Epinephelus guaza) is most the common species of grouper seen around Corsica, with numbers having recovered significantly as a result of the strictly enforced hunting ban. A further highlight at Merouville is a visit to the regular hangout of a moray eel that is also well used to divers and can often be tempted by Günther to come quite a way out of its hole.
