O Martin Wells είναι ένας "zoologist by profession, a painter, a SCUBA diver, and a yachtsman between times"

This is a book about animals. Not the sweet and furry sort, but mostly about fish and invertebrates, the worms and the squid, jellyfish and small creatures that most people prefer to ignore. It deals with things that interest me as a research worker, as a voyeur, and as a university teacher.

I have two reasons for trying to foist this rather idiosyncratic collection on you. One is simply that I believe life is more interesting if you know what is going on around you.

The second reason is that I think people ought to know something about the lives of other inhabitants of this planet, for the good of all of us. I am a fellow of Cambridge college and I scan the wide range of newspapers and weeklies available in our common room. Apart from a considerable space devoted to motorcars and the stock market (some poor people work for all their lives and all they ever make is money) what evidently matters to the outside world is printed or painted or presented in stage, the commentaries of people on people.

You would hardly know that other animals existed.
